No, this cedar tree isn’t on fire. It’s releasing pollen, and lots of it. Good thing I’m not allergic! You can see video of the pollen releasing here.
As I’ve done many times before, I walked into the middle of the river to get some low, wide angle shots of the swiftly moving water. This time, however, I misjudged the power of the rain swollen rapids and a misplaced foot on a slippery rock sent me tumbling into the current. I struggled to keep the camera above the water, sacrificing knees, feet, and arms as I tumbled along. Just as I was about to be swept into a deep, turbulent pool I managed to grab hold of the tree in the middle with one arm while holding the camera up with the other.
After a few minutes of trying to figure out how I was going to get out of this predicament with my camera intact, I managed to slowly pull myself up onto the tree and escape the torrent. The camera received a pretty good splashing but I was very fortunate it didn’t get submerged. While this wasn’t necessarily a life threatening experience, I almost destroyed my camera. I’ll just have to be more careful next time. This was the last shot I took right before I fell in.
