Returning to Earth

Returning to EarthThe ghosts of the past are thick in places like this. Every sound seems twice as loud and I often feel like I’m being watched. And yet, there’s beauty and a quiet dignity that keeps me coming back.

  1. Wow. The picture shows very good that we just exist a very small moment in time. How everything will go the inevitable way of decay. This is such a strong image.

Perfect colors and I like the slightly blurry parts. Dreamy, thoughtful and beautiful

  3. clarence says:

I like the soft focus on the edges. Almost mmonochrome. Good capture.

This is a great subject. I like old things. They make great photos. Nice post processing as well. I have been looking for a place like this for a long exposure under a full moon. Great one!

  5. Nan says:

    Awesome picture !

  6. DeWaun says:

Ohmygosh! The mood is fantastic. I’m pretty much persuaded that the Texas Hill Country is one of the more picturesque areas in the country. Fantastic composition!

Great subject. Where on earth do you live, there seems to be so many run down places near you ! Great atmosphere and love those shafts of light.

The streaming light through the fog and trees is just the start of this great photograph. The blue overall tint conveys that cold, old, decaying feel so well. I would love to see a few more like this. Thanks for posting such a great one.

  10. Nate says:

It looks like the tree is trying to push the house away. I like the little sun rays coming through the trees.

Very nice. I’ve tried to capture old run down houses like this before, but just couldn’t quite get it right. This is fantastic

The real trick to the look of this image and most of my images is layer masking. Curve, contrast, and color adjustments are the basic tools in my post processing arsenal. I outlined the basic technique in the comments section of this image a while back. I’ve built on it since then but the basic technique remains the same.

The specifics for this image aren’t all that important because every image is different and I never use the same series of steps twice. When I start processing an image like this, I start with the basic curves technique and play with various editing tools and layer masks. My advice is to experiment, not only with the basic curve adjustments, but with other processing tools and filters. Virtual Photographer is a wonderful plugin that, combined with layer masks, can open up a whole new world of possibilities. Plus itÂ’s free.

Stunning. I can keep looking at this for hours. I love the light effect you created on the upper right corner.

  22. Absolutely a wonderful piece you have here.
The mood is simply fantastic, and the overall soft tones really is what sets that mood.
